Mouse skates (also called glides or mouse feet) are the small pads on the underside of your mouse. They are the only part that touches the mousepad, so they decide how smooth, fast and consistent every swipe feels.
Why mouse skates matter
The material and shape of the skates change how much friction the mouse meets. Worn, chipped or uneven feet make the glide scratchy and unpredictable, and that is often the real reason a good mouse suddenly feels "off".
Standard skates
Standard skates are plastic feet like the ones that ship with the mouse. They are quiet, familiar and a safe choice when you simply want the original feel back after the stock feet have worn down.
- Glide: smooth, with the feel the mouse was designed around.
- Sound: quiet and soft.
- Best for: restoring a worn mouse to its original behaviour.
Glass skates
Glass skates are made of glass instead of plastic. They usually glide faster and wear down more slowly, but they feel and sound different from plastic, and they work best on cloth mousepads.
- Glide: faster and very consistent.
- Durability: they usually last longer than plastic feet.
- Best for: players who want maximum speed on a cloth pad.
How to choose
- You want the original feel, or your feet are simply worn out: choose standard skates.
- You use a cloth mousepad and want a faster glide: choose glass skates.
- Either way, the set must be cut for your exact mouse model.
When to replace your skates
- The mouse sounds or feels scratchy when it moves.
- The glide is uneven between different directions.
- The feet look chipped, thin or worn on one side.
How to install new skates
- Peel off the old feet.
- Clean the surface with an alcohol wipe and let it dry completely.
- Line up the new skates with the mouse and press them down firmly for about 30 seconds.
- Give them a short run-in on your mousepad before heavy use.
